Recording police brutality: how one snap decision changed this town

As Black Lives Matter protests have spread across America, more and more people have begun sharing clips of police violence online. It’s not just happening at protests, either: sometimes police violence is captured in everyday life.
On June 2nd, a traffic stop in Baytown, Texas turned violent when a couple friends began to question the arrest of a black man. One man recorded the clip and it went viral, but it didn’t end there. It set off a ripple effect across his life and the city of Baytown, Texas.
What happens when someone uses technology to glare back at police interactions? For Isaiah Benavides, it may have put him in harm’s way.

With money they can hire soldiers, and with soldiers extort money. And, when their authority is denied, the first use they always make of money, is to hire soldiers to kill or subdue all who refuse them more money." -Lysander Spooner. (1870)

  • We no longer have (and haven't had for quite a long time) police officers who understand their role as public servants. What we do have now is the thin blue line gang. The federal definition of gang as used by the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is: An association of three or more individuals; Whose members collectively identify themselves by adopting a group identity, which they use to create an atmosphere of fear or intimidation, frequently by employing one or more of the following: a common name, slogan, identifying sign, symbol, tattoo or other physical marking, style or color of clothing, hairstyle, hand sign or graffiti; Whose purpose in part is to engage in criminal activity and which uses violence or intimidation to further its criminal objectives. The association may also possess some of the following characteristics: The members may employ rules for joining and operating within the association. The members may meet on a recurring basis. The association may provide physical protection of its members from others. The association may seek to exercise control over a particular geographic location or region, or it may simply defend its perceived interests against rivals.

Because of a family member that hit the dog with a shovel, and there inquires about him I had to setal out of court for chump change, instead of giving up my family members info. • Using profanity in public? Isn’t this the United States of America? What happened to free speech? You know why they keep those clearly unconstitutional, unenforceable in a court of law, blasphemy statutes on the books? So that corrupt police officers can use them as an excuse to arrest and brutalize law-abiding citizens!!

    D SD SAcum 2 Zile
  • I honestly have no idea how all the cop violence will pan out for all American citizens, unfortunately, especially if you are black. Right now, I do not see an end to it. I can see at least the first step towards a fairer society and that would be removing completely police qualified immunity, it has become a licence to maim and kill. in 1982 the US Supreme Court ruled that government officials, such as law enforcement officers, we're entitled to qualified immunity from civil-rights lawsuits if their actions did not violate “clearly established“ rights. This means that they cannot be held liable for constitutional violations. That was a tragic error of judgement on behalf of the Supreme Court and its cost and still costs American citizens dearly. Good luck to you all.
