Building a camera: the plan was simple until it wasn’t
We built a DIY camera with the Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera using C-mount and CS--mount lenses. The Raspberry Pi is a super tiny computer that is highly programmable. People have used these to program everything from smart mirrors, to portable arcades, to COVID-19 case counters, and even greenhouses. They are tiny boxes that - if you know how to code - can do pretty much anything. Here’s our video showing the challenges for someone without that coding experience.

Have you built a custom camera before?
I'm about to. I'm doing it with 120 film, though, not this.
Nop. But i built a working gaming computer🥰
@Mr. TechBeast please keep your dignity. Don't ask things from others. Please have some self rest. If you don't have something, be content and humble about it, instead to start asking. I know maybe you were joking. But I am just suggesting, incase.

Love Becca!!!!!!
This reminds me of this old adafruit project, Pi Setup | DIY WiFi Raspberry Pi Touchscreen Camera | Adafruit Learning System with a little tweaking it might be the nudge you need in the right direction to get your Becca Cam into a true point and shoot state.
Ehh link died because youtube reasons, but searching pi camera on adafruits projects/tutorials section should bring it right up for anyone interested.
Me : Still Want Pi 4 Camera, With Battery
1:50 its a RUSSIAN CARPET(i am from Russia
Little becca little cam
aha, a rpi camera guide, need to look into that
Love your style, love the project, can't wait to make one myself!
This was really impressive considering Becca doesn’t do programming, I may buy one and hack apart an old camera.
Can we use it for shooting ROlabel video.
I bet every single senior person at The Verge is over thirty and feels old so they have to have these mixed up lot around so as to keep off of anti-depressants. I bet you !
"a coding language called python"
There is a graphical user interface for pi cam. Google Picameraapp by Bill Williams. It will help a lot.
Sorry, I just love Becca.
The the terminal is not in python, it is in bash
At least I know that it isn’t python
5tyyy
Is it better than iphone 11 camera ?? Which camera sensor is that 12Mp IMX477 ?
Jeez, stop saying dude, dudes!
"Hell yeah dude!.. Hell yeah dude!.. Hell yeah dude!.. And that makes you cool!.. (i guess..)
You should do more challenges like this.
Becca is really great in camera, her videos are different than other reviewers and Dieter is the soul of Verge.
Need that f/1.2-1.7 all natural bokeh cream using what ever c-mount lens you like and on the cheap? Becca cam 2.0 is coming - Retro Edition!"
Becca start your own channel please!!! You're too pure for Verge
When you learn to code, you say hello to the world.
I simp for becca
Ayy that's not bad
Any Idea where I can find the Face Mask that Becca is wearing?
so disappointed with the note 20.... was hoping to get the smaller brother but i guess I'll just keep my note 10
Someone forgot to tell her about loops in python...
More Linux and raspberry pi in Verge pls
These projects seem like a lot of fun. More please!
Bye Bye The Verge.
The easiest/shortcut solution would have been to use python to run a terminal command using something like os.system("insert command here") along with a timestamp variable of the photo name, this way you could have associated the shutter button to the command you manually ran in the terminal via your keyboard.... so it's like typing it in the keyboard but with a different timestamp every time... anyways... better luck next time

This is a super impressive first coding project!
Raspberry Pi actually has a lot of good documentation available on their website. For someone who calls themselves a tech journalist, at least ... Why some people are lazy to the point of going through hours of trial and error instead of reading something for 10 minutes is baffling me.
This video is a delight. Hooray for Full Frame and hooray for more Becca vids!
1:49 FLOOR GANG
You should have told us the price of that whole thing because I bet almost everyone thinks this is a cheap "camera" AND IT'S NOT!
Ok buds
Omgggg enough with the buds and dudes
I desperately wish there were more videos like this! Of trying to turn the HQ Cam into a point and shoot. I desperately want to do that but it seems like no one else is giving it a shot :/
Yessss a show about camera on verge.
That was really fun to watch! We need more Becca projects 😊
Loved this so much. In answer to your question at the end, what are traditional cameras doing to take on the computational photography (such as night modes and HDR) in phone photography? Thanks for the infectious enthusiasm!
7:14 I thought I was the crazy one, taking pictures on my iPad 😅
Shes so pretty
Yo I absolutely stan Becca. So fresh!
This video is reall way interesting than any of her other verge videos.
More building things videos please! This was awesome!
I didn't even read the video title but I clicked it anyway. Reason: Becca! She's awesome
This was really cool and well done! Great job Becca, looking forward to seeing the other camera type videos you have in your series.
I'm pretty sure you can map the terminal command to your beccam button and run the python script.
wait, is it she or he ??
Makes one appreciate what camera manufacturers go through
Noice
Hahaha - laughs in evil programmer
Do I need a static wrist band or one that you get with your cancer donation
at least its not building a
What about installing android os on the board and then using it
So first you need a table
Good for you! This is awesome. Way to stick with it and the photos look great.
It seems like this camera lacks an ir cut filter, from all the purple shadows and black cloth being turned int purple in the sunlight. So If you guys want this thing to look as good as possible, I recommend a heliopan ir-uv cut filter to get proper and accurate colors.
This was great! Can we get more of the building / creating side of tech - it's way more interesting than a slightly faster phone....
4:17 welcome to coding
You are so industrious! I have a couple pi's and love that new camera :-)
Inspiring!
Hey B you are beautiful.👋🏻
One thing to try would be to write a script that when you hit the shutter button it quits the app and then opens it again. This way it’s easier to take another picture.
I MF love me a Becca vid
Becca is an amazing combo of fun, interesting content and being unbelievably charming.
All I've learned today is that I can take higher resolution photos if I plug a keyboard into my a6000
😂
😂
I'm not sure this person deserves to own a Bolex.
Really appreciate this effort. This is coming from a Computer vision Engineer.
Hey Becca, you've just passed through all the possible stages of frustration/excitement we devs are facing every day! Welcome to the club, funny video.
how DIY is it when it's two pre-built modules that fit into each other and the software is pre built, you don't even have to compile a project. IDK, it's a good entry into that world however, apologies for being weirdly pedantic and insecure.
Jesse Patterson it’s DIY in that 99.9% of people just buy their cameras
Wow this looked so fun! I think I am going to try this project too! (Realistically probably work on this until another project distracts me lol)
Being a Software Engineer I couldn't stop laughing
I should mention... As an electronic engineer, please don't think that developing camera hardware is as easy as that, maybe the case... From the CMOS sensors required, the noise filters that get the signals from the sensors, the lenses to manipulate the light, that's where the hardware complexity lies. But cool project nontheless ;)
i felt the genuine excitement for Becca when she finally got to the Hardware part. i love soldering, gluing, assembling, cutting, melting plastic, wiring. HATE downloading scripts, looking up parameters, mysterious errors, Linux not booting. so i totally get it. P.S. you're not the first to bring suspect looking keyboards out on the sidewalk here in NYC so don't feel bad.
I loved it
Cool camera, bud.
young jimmy neutron, thank you!
omg i know python HAHAH maybe i should do this
I like that you show and share your mistakes. Interesting video idea that was well executed.
How much for this?
Becca is such a nerd. I like her.
From a pro programmer perspective, man, I can say you nailed it! You are a builder/maker already. And if you got through that scripting/programming but don't have a clue what's gonna happen, you're a genius.
Was it a $2000 camera?
This is such fun video and experiment. I want more. Lol I hope you work that Becca cam more i wanna see an update.
Floor gang confirmed
Are you a boy?
Awesome video!
Cool cam!
Becca, this is great! I was really impressed by your determined attitude. Way to go. Ignore all the trolls, the biggest step is the first one, and you clearly do that well! Keep up the great videos.
This is hella , bud ,dude hilarious ... becca you need your own tech show ! totally made my morning in Australia .
Becca is why I subscribed to The Verge
awesome
Honestly, I did not really like how she would discourage the software part so much.. Python is a great programming language and from such tech channel I would have expected a more professional look to the code as well, instead of giving it a negative look
What's the difference between this and a linux laptop with a webcam?
