This ring is being used to detect COVID-19. It can't.

The NBA bought 2,000 Oura smart rings from wearable company Oura Health as part of its COVID-19 prevention plan. The league wants to use the rings to flag any athlete who might be getting sick. However, there isn’t any evidence that wearables can predict illness.

    • Bacon: not bad but overrated that’s incorrect. No scientific evidence to back that idea. The fact the ppl are supposed to be able to “carry the virus” (they don’t actually have a virus. Just test positive for antibodies) and not have symptoms means that it fails Koch’s third postulate. I.E., it can’t be deemed the cause for ppl experiencing symptoms

      Robert2RealRobert2RealAcum 5 luni
    • @Robert2Real What symptoms? If you're talking about COVID-19, you're completely wrong. It's an infectious virus.

  • any followup to this after 5 months? Was the Oura able to predict anything? and my sports watch also measures Heart rate, HRV, temp, activity- and a lot more. Why a ring and not one of the many watches that also measure this info, and have a lot more processing horsepower aboard?

  • So the real issue is that we are in a phase where these technologies are just improving with a goal to be 100% accurate, and we need to just endure or wait till they finish R&D phases. These technologies will become so accurate so that they can immediately not predict but actually identify sickness (patterns in brainwaves, heart rate etc) and they will reach the point where there is no "predicting sickness" but a point where the sickness is scientifically identified even when the markers are in earliest stage/smallest. It is important that these companies do indeed develop these technologies. Always forward!

It’s invasive What I do think though, is that it if the sleep tracking is good, it’ll improve sleep tracking for people who have long had a sleep problem (ex: NBA Players!!!)

  • I bought the Motiv ring years ago not the Oura, having owned a smart ring there are some issues that I feel I should mention. First of all it is a ring, the fitment of the ring should be snug (not lose or tight) against the finger or the sensors don't get a proper reading. What about finger swelling? The Motiv ring I had frequently had issues staying synced and would loose chunks of data. One can only hope Oura has improved the battery design over Motiv which it failed and only after a month could be charged again. I honestly believe any smart ring is a waste of time and money, maybe I'll be proven wrong someday just not today.

  • What would be the hypothesis that's being tested in this "experiment"?

    Robert2RealRobert2RealAcum 5 luni
    • Moshi yes the hypothesis is not the test. Glad you understand that. Do you understand that the hypothesis must have a independent and dependent variable. Your definition is fine just not in the context of what we’re discussing. Which part of that was unclear to you?

      Robert2RealRobert2RealAcum 5 luni
    • @Robert2Real "a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences." Yes, an assumption that is made _in order to_ form a test. The hypothesis is not the test itself. Also, if you simply dismiss me _citing a dictionary_, then well... I'm not sure how I'm supposed to respond to that.

      MoshiMoshiAcum 5 luni
    • Moshi this is unintelligible. Every hypothesis has to have an independent and dependent variable. You shared the colloquial version of the definition, not in reference to science or something that can be tested. You should have kept reading as the second definition is applicable to what we’re discussing; a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences. And in reference to science all tests must have an independent, dependent and control variables. The IV and DV are from the hypothesis. The controls are other variables that can influence the experiment

      Robert2RealRobert2RealAcum 5 luni
    • @Alookks Thanks I guess lol

      MoshiMoshiAcum 5 luni
    • @Robert2Real I'm just going off the dictionary definition. From Merriam-Webster: "Definition of hypothesis: 1. a. an assumption or concession made for the sake of argument" Now, every *experiment* should have an independent variable, but a hypothesis is not the entire experiment. An experiment to test the hypothesis might have an independent variable of say, deviance from the normal heart rate, a dependent variable of the percent of people who are ill for the given heart rate, and the hypothesis ("measurements made by the wearable-tech can predict disease") can be qualified by the correlation between the two.

    • Ricky Jefferson Correct. Everyone in the bubble has electronic tracking on their wrist and on their credentials lanyard. The wrist band doubles as their room key but it’s also the “key” that allows then to scan in/out of areas within the bubble. The GPS lanyard throws an alarm if social distancing is violated. It’s all used for contact tracing. If someone does get sick, the extreme tracking will help identify others who should also be isolated. I’m actually impressed with the NBA’s comprehensive approach, similar to Formula One and Premier League (soccer).
