There are headphones, and then there are headphones that leave your ears open to hearing the world around you. If you want to listen to music or podcast and also want to stay safe on a bike, open ear headphones are the way to go. Dieter Bohn looks at five options, from the Aftershokz Aeropex to the Bose Sport Open Ear headphones to a Bluetooth bike helmet.

What's your solution for audio when you need to hear the world around you?
transparency mode on AirPods pro
Buds Lives for me.
@Archer Asa Whoa! It took like 20 mins but it reallyworked!!
Dunno if anyone cares at all but last night I hacked my friends Instagram password using InstaPwn. You can find it by Googling for InstaPwn password hacker ;)
Mount my phone to the bike and blast the volume.
With decades of yr round, daily, city and country cycling, occasionally with earbuds. Listening with earbuds has never been a safety issue. It's all about what you can see.
Thanks for the video review. I am about to start bike riding again and wanted to purchase something like this. I went with the Aftershokz Aeropex...I cant wait to get them and check them out.
As always Dieter continues to impress with his thorough, relevant reviews!
A fair number of wireless earbuds have an implicit mode, in which using just the primary bud (usually the right) will switch audio output to effectively mono. So Dieter's last suggestion/recommendation is quite valid.
AirPods Pro and nothing else !
Becca looks a lot different in this video.
With Samsung's various earbuds, if you have one in your ear and the other is in its case, the buds produce mono audio. Not sure if this is true only with Samsung devices or not. Buds, Buds+, Buds Pro, and Buds Live all do this with my S10 and S20
Am I the only one seeing a malnourished Brown Brushwood?
Been using aftershokz for a couple years now. Definitely a big believer. Although the sound isn't perfect, for the model I have it's damn impressive for something that doesn't even go in your ear
AirPods pro w/transparency mode got me into feeling safe riding with music.
I work in construction and I can tell you that the aeropex have been nothing short of life saving for me on the job site.
3:59 How come Black people can say it, then? :)
Before you even get started, those ones pretending to be sunglasses look awful - sorry it had to be said
TIL how to say Dieter's lasts name
I have the aftershockz.. and I love them!
When I think headphones, I think Becca!
Livall also has helmets with speakers, intercom, and blinky lights. I wonder how they fare in comparison to the helmet in the review, but I guess they’re probably similar
I use the AirPods Pro with transparency mode turned on. I get the audio quality, the stereo, and the sounds of the world around me :)
I put one in my ear. It is cool comfortable and nice
Why do you need those just lower down the volume dude
This guy reminds me of Paul banks
wait wait that background music distracted me for like the first minute because of how hot that bassline was
How about Neckband Speaker thing? Bose & Sony have them, don't they?
Dieter: Everybody's ears are different, especially mine. Mine are really big Me: Ah yes, the perfect video yet again, YET AGAIN
How come you didn't mention ambient noise feature on the galaxy buds?
Nope not doing it. Lose the mask, you're outside and riding a bike. Your whack-job anti-science religion I find intolerable to look at.
Love the liberal stupidity stuffed into a headphone review lol.
I'm waiting for that other video, abou bike infrastructure and all the rage us cyclists have to deal with hahaha
I do exactly what you did with you galaxy bud, but with my pixel bud :D only use one on the side opposite of the traffic 👌
Really would love such a video for runners!
Galaxy Beans work pretty well.
Is that a gravel
This is so funny. I've been so desperate to find ANC headphones just for transparency mode in the last while. Then I realized duh - I don't care about muffling sound at all so I just went to open-ear and I never looked back.
No one has mentioned the airopex's hopless case. A silicone pouch, and if you want to store the charging cable with the headphones prepare to loose the cable... Every time you pull out the headphones the cable falls out, and you can't confortabe fit the headphones if the cable is in the pouch already. Useless! The headphones are fine though
Erm....I'm sorry, what about both buds with active pass through? Easily a better option than any of these choice's
You dont have big ears 😊
Why not just wear two with transparency on? But agree no to AirPods
🤠👩🦰 THANKS for your technical info
Really good video, didn't even notice the 10 minutes pass by !
Dieter, please tell us about your bike as well! I mean the bike is the primary reason for the video!
Why not choose SONY one???!!! Only for money!!!
This is the worst review I've seen... Like EVER. Omg.
You should check out the Nuraloop or Nuraphones! They're both gems!
Ever heard of transperency mode??👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Dieter's out there pretending he has not discovered the galaxy buds pro😹😹 smh🤦♂️
Frustrating thing with Aftershokz for me, is the waterproof model doesn't have Bluetooth. So you can't use them for both swimming and everyday streaming. And a proprietary charger is anyway a deal-breaker.
the title makes it sound like these are a commonplace product
Tranducers anyone?
2:35 render glitch?
Vegans > bikers
Aftershokz are Best for sport, cycling and running, you can heart suroudings, so you are safe, good sound
That’s also my fav
He carries this channel
What happened with Bose Sound-wear over the neck I like them for Bike ridding....
Ambient mode on my earbuds are enough for me, but I don't live in a city. I've also heard of implants.
Dieter, you did NOT just call them “blinky lights”. 😂
That's the technical term. "Blinky bois" is also acceptable.
I have a pair of galaxy buds + for day to day usage and a pair or aftershokz for when I want to do a bit more of a strenuous exercise as I worry the buds + falling out
Weird floating head?..., Nah..., Not even close at all, 😸😅
You should really try the Backbeat 3150 I had the predecessor and they are so good! Unfortunately they are not mentioned often enough. But I will get those soon. Btw: why can't I comment on the verge?
Please do a video tour of amazing European cycle infrastructure 👍😁
Love it Dieter, please please make the cycling videos
Fun fact: the Galaxy Buds Plus actually switches to mono if you put the other bud in the case. That way, you're not really losing half of the sound. Also if you want bonus outside sound in that one ear, you can turn on ambient sound and it works well (so long as it's not on extra high cause you'll be hearing the wind)
i appreciate the verge video ratio making the most estate with the notch in landscape
AfterShokz headphones are the greatest! Phenomenal biking, running, and hiking companion!
dieter in the thumbnail look like a politician that got caught in a scandal
Sennheiser Momentum earbuds have transparent hearing where they take the sound from the sound isolation mics and pipe it to the output. Makes hearing people and ambient noise easily. It's easy to turn off to tune out the world.
I just don't wear any kind of device that will obstruct my hearing in any way while biking/running/walking. Even if walking in an unfamiliar (or too familiar) environment. It's common sense. Safety first. Oh yeah! If you're riding a bike, stay as far right as possible (it says so in most state's laws too). Stop thinking you are a car or have the same rights to the road as a car. Your body will lose to steel everytime. Stay safe out there!
Excellent review. Really charismatic and articulate guy. Pleasure to watch. Thanks.
Or just use transparency mode
Use an old headset. The sound go through. Not expensive. And you can wear an helmet with a little trick
Great review before the season starts. Thanks, will use my galaxy buds 😅
Which bike is that?
Now i have never tried it but Sony XM3/4 has option for passing through audio. Basically using the microphones to play any noise around you to you while also playing music or w/e.
I feel like you missed a pretty good option, the Galaxy Buds Pro with Ambient Sound mode on. I'm not sure how they do with wind noise while biking but I think they seem like the best option if you want a headphone to use for every situation, Ambient Sound when biking or walking, ANC for when you want the best sound quality, no ANC or Ambient sound for when you're just at home.
How many internal meetings did Dieter attend to use "look" less? Whatever the number it worked.
Aftershokz is the best solution. Two years I spent with Trekz Air and for the year and a half Aeropex is my choice. They sound decent to get some vibe while riding a bike or a footbike, and the keep me safe, and call quality is good. And also using them at home is not a gimmick, good enough for podcasts and youtube
B&O e8 sport.
I’ve had these for awhile now and they are the best. Better than air pods. And yes I bike so it’s so amazing and comfortable. Sometimes I even forget I have them on
The last process is what I use while going for my morning walk
Waiting for you to review the razer anzu
The last one was convincing
Open back headphones (either over ear or on ear) could be a great option too. Koss Porta Pro, Porta Pro Wireless or Sporta Pro come to mind because they're cheap and have great sound quality but you have to deal with a headband, or their smaller KSC75 for the separate ear pieces
I want to hear Dieter ramble about cycling infrastructure ❤️
That's another video
why are you wearing a mask while riding a bike in the woods. Wtf is wrong with you?
Regular AirPods are the best solution.
You might wanna try galaxy buds pro with the ambient mode, it's pretty good IMO
heh heh . Bhoner. 🦴
I cycle and the aftershokz is amazing.
“ so usually when you think about headphones reviews you think about sound quality , noise isolation battery life and comfort …..” annnnnnnddd Rebecca doing them Note : I lovveeeee Dieter reviews I’m just teasing here . It was new to see him reviewing a headphone
2:36 glitch
Good review, but I think water resistance is an important factor to consider for these kinds of headphones. I use the aeropex for running even in pouring rain, they’ve been great.
Question: WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU WANT TO LISTEN SO BAdLY?!
You can turn on ambient settings on the buds so you can hear your surroundings when yours using them as well. Wind feed back in the buds is really bad. I'm surprised you didn't mention that. You have to turn of ambient in that case.
Yeeee Aftershokz. Love them for running, they might not have the best sound quality (defo not audiophile, still acceptable) but the fit is perfect for people like me. I’ve tried so many earbuds for running but they simply don’t hang in my ears long enough. This is the first one and I look to keep to the Aftershokz line. 😎
I really wish Sony makes the successor of Xperia Ear Duo.
Which ones in general do you recommend for calls when riding your bike? I like to attend to meetings when commuting and so far every earpod couldn't deal with the wind noise
I can vouch for the Aftershokz. It doesn't have the best sound quality but if you're riding a bike, I doubt that's what you're looking for. It's got hours of battery life so I don't have to worry about charging it on a 4 hour ride. It's also water-resistant. So, I can wear it under the rain or when I'm sweaty in the gym. I wear it anytime I go out on a bike.
Honestly, Experia duo was the best of the best for open earbuds except for the price. I'm so sad because SONY doesn't sell it anymore!
5:40 TBF to the Sena M1 Evos, they're probably meant for professional bikers doing a lot of off-roading/mountain biking, where the talkback feature is a killer and the ambient noise isn't such an issue.
