Galaxy Chromebook 2 hands-on: less expensive, just as red
Samsung has unveiled its Galaxy Chromebook 2, its newest Chromebook that starts at just $549.99. It features a QLED display, a sturdy convertible chassis, and a bold red finish. It looks promising -- but we still have some questions.

Zits spots plukes
why not iPad Pro if it's not a desktop OS?
I loathe Chromebooks with every fiber of my being.i have one currently while going through engineering school and it's torture
Why does this even exist ?
Who holds a laptop in one hand for a long time? Barbarians?
Can't touch the MBA M1 lmfao
I hate when reporters wear masks for absolutely no reason at all. We won't think you're dangerous if you don't wear a mask when alone.

seriously.... my Acer spine 713 is better specs for only 549.00 bestbuy. HDMI, microsd, 10 gen. core i5 ect... oh! and my screen is absolutely Beautiful.
Wt hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaa
480 p are you serious!! Why?? ☹️
id rather get hp chromebook at $700
"No front facing camera" ? But there seems to be a cut out there. I'm confused
why the hell did they take off the sensor
Still, why you want chrome os at that price point ?
This is a depressing Chromebook
Just by the basic Macbook Air M1... have some respect for yourself... Chromebook? Yuck!
Chromebook is still a thing?
Is...not fan
Can Google asistent
red is my favorite color
Imagine one of the kids these days flexing on their distance learning classes with a Galaxy Chromebook.
can i install windows on it?
Another swing and miss, Samsung. Maybe third time lucky?
For anyone thinking of buying this: Samsung's Chromebook Plus V2, which costs $499, has a finger print reader and rear-facing camera, and has the same specs, still exists.
NO OLED, I'll keep my Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 1
If YG had a chromebook
It might just be an optical illusion but at 3:23 the nearest edge of the bottom case looks bent compared to the far edge.
1:09 manufacturing defect.
Didn’t even notice, that’s awful
I prefer mac for productivity and windows for gaming... 😌
Could have made the video a lot more enticing to watch.
So wooden!! Get Dieter on.... He looks he has a soul and real character
chromebook using intel chip? what a waste of money compare with m1 macbook air
For who is this product? The specs are just poor for the price. (Even if Samsung is known to lower their prices to 20/30% after a month or two). How many they think they gonna sells? 1000 units will be already an achievement.
Can't stand the reporter. skipped
Crapbook
amazing review❤
You can get a decent i5 10gen, 8gb ram and ssd laptop for $550. Plus it runs actual Windows and not Android OS.
Honestly, just buy an iPad or a Samsung Tab!
Password only? No Smart Unlock for android phone users?
DEX laptop! can somebody tell Samsung to enable Dex integration with this toy? If I can connect my Samsung Note phone to this and continue flawless my tasks can be a game changer!!!
Waiting for the host Becca Farsace!
so it's got a worse screen, worse cpu, worse appearance (imo), and no stylus compared to the original? why is this called 2?
Farhoni.
3afakome.dohklo.3andi
4/64 GB variant in 2020. seriously?
Chromebooks were made for ARM (because of Android Apps, efficiency). Crappy Intel processor: No thanks.
Please dont scream... Not nice to Listen to
I'm sorry, where was this shot?
lmao can't believe I'm gonna write this but for 699 (upgraded model) just get an M1 Mac Book Air.
@Jieon Choi Still $899
@Kev Lew you can get a student discount.
M1 Macbook Air starts at $1000. The discounted models ($699 during the holidays, around $799 now) are the older i3 Macbooks.
How is color a feature!?!
Watching from M1 and meh
That laptop costs 1000$+
this is falling apart even in a controlled environment 1:09. defines Samsung.
chromebook is such a joke
excellent video! does this model have a holder/slot for a pen? And what do you consider good battery life? 10 hrs or so? Love that red design but not sure if I'd get this over the Acer Spin 713 or Lenovo Flex 5.
I love Samsung but is it only color bright obnoxious red or is there a low profile color
Please use more pronouns 😅
Not to be rude. But this wasn't pleasant to listen to. Bit all over the place and not clear. Intonation and cadence was also off
While I totally agree, maybe she can improve with her work and give better reviews in the future!
Totally agree. I've been so accustomed to reviews done by Dieter, Becca, and Ashley which are so well crafted and presented. This one just didn't have that balance of information and entertainment.
Yawn. Chromebooks dull. I haven't watched a review on one in ages... And literally nothing has changed since.
Watching on my OG Galaxy Chromebook.
Not the Celeron :( my phone is faster than that lol
But.. Why would you want to use Chrome OS exept for its lower prive point? At $699 you can buy an older Surface Laptop with better screen, bigger SSD, more usability and better compatibility. You still can run all the Google Apps but so much more. Yes, battery life may be an important factor, but then again.. $699? And why would you care about a better processor? Chrome OS and its hardware-lineup still feel like beta, but I get the appeal of these devices and hope they figure out, where they want to go from there down at Google.
”If it lives up to 14 hour battery life, but that’s a big if” isn’t it your job to know if the last 14 hours?
That red colour is stunning :O!
Honestly, with the release of Apples M1 chip, there’s little to no reason why you should go with any option other than Apple.
Not everyone wants a MacBook.
@PocariPocari I see. It's just comparing the M1 with Intel i3... it's like trying to win a bike vs Mustang at full speed race.. lol
even with the m1's release you can run ios and ipad apps sure, but imagine the mac having a touchscreen. It would be the perfect device.
@Tim C I think must is an exaggeration, but because so many devices are touch-enabled nowadays, folks that only have a phone or never owned a traditional laptop would have a much easier time. I think of older people and tablet use. Artists could benefit from drawing directly on the screen. I imagine student work could see benefits as well. Ever try annotating a pdf? lol
@PocariPocari In what situation is touchscreen a must?
Once again not available in my country :/
I've never heard someone refer to a laptop as fierce 😂
Well not as much as a io shield being called a brace
It's bold! It's fierce! It makes a statement whilst out on the town!!!! Lol
A little bit more enthusiasm, please!
nah she alright
the 1st model was a 1 grand browser?!!! I'd take an MacBook over that!
Ikr
Google still makes these? 🤦♂️
I miss the butterfly keyboard from the macbooks.
That's why I am holding onto my 2019 MacBook. I prefer the butterfly keyboard over the new keyboard on the 2020 MacBooks.
Just save some money and get the M1 MacBook air. It is now the best in the market. If you get use to chrome OS, you will get use to that as well.
You get better silicon. Who cares about the logo anyway.
Don't those START at $999? For a laptop that is NOT touchscreen, and is NOT 2-1 convertible to tablet mode. But you do get that Apple logo on the back, which seems to be the main selling point.
1:07 is that a broken back lid?
So meh 😒
yup for 549? not bad. Great screen but wish it had an ARM chip...😞
Such a jarring experience watching this review...
Great price. Might need to buy one to complete a website. Though there's no reason it shouldn't be possible using a phone nowadays.
where is becca
Samsung won’t even remove the anti theft cable for a The Verge reporter... weird
@Sebastian Remi dude I'm not annoyed, just wondering, i do think the video would feel more simeless and natural if it was removed, espacialy for the benefit of Samsung.
I mean most of The Verge reviewers are Apple sheeps so fair enough
@Sebastian Remi he didnt say he was annoyed, you are overly negative
This video was made at a product show case at CES2021, where MANY reporters come to make reviews. Does verge have some unknown privilege for Samsung to remove the anti theft cable only for them? nope. Maybe you should ask Verge to actually get a sponsored product to review it if you are so annoyed by the anti theft cable... so entitled sheesh.
I like red, but I really hate the bottom bezel.
Cool But for the love of jeez, they couldn't let you untether the thing?
@KEN BEE I don’t see the issue
@NoHomework16 It doesn't? She was making a preview of a product....and its strapped to a table the whole time
Doesn’t impact the video on any way BUT FOR THE LOVE OF JEEZ 😂😂😂
Great review. I wonder if the i3 is powerful enough for parallels. I think samsung might have missed the mark on this.
@KEN BEE it's a virtualization software
Parallels?
chromebook shoud never be over $400
@Malte Laurids Brigge if only google put an effort into the software instead of stretching pre existing android software and dedicated themselves on creating an actual flagship device this could justify the overblown price of this chromebooks.
@jon wik exactly! Because 90% of people do NOT need more than that, which would only complicate what little computing they do. I used to do sites and all manner of things but now I don't and rarely if ever find a chromebook lacking. Sometimes I need to find a different way to do something but generally what I can't do I don't need to do. So I just open it, sign in, save things online, and that's it. I regularly drown laptops somehow so... Get another chromebook, sign in, and... There you go, it's all back where it was. People who criticize Chromebooks for being incapable of doing anything are generally devs and/or people who have never used one. I had a Pixelbook for 2+ years I think and now need to find something new. It might be the Samsung though I wish it was higher end, I think they dropped the specs too low. I like the HP c1101 or whatever it's called? Nice specs anyway.
tbh these chrome books do look great and has decent specs but u cant do a lot with chrome os. Its like having steam engine in lamborghini.
Old and more powerful laptops can be even cheaper
Yes 😅
I think 550 for this is quite nice actually.
for 550 you can get a windows laptop with a ryzen 5 4500u, 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd... admittedly it's gonna be all plastic and have a mediocre screen, but this doesn't seem like it's worth it at all
Do authorized reviewers tend to steal units at reviewer workshops?
? It's a public place
I really like this reviewer. Fresh presence in The Verge’s videos
surface go laptop is better-just spend the extra money for it and do not buy the base model
Chromebooks are the way forward, especially as they migrate to lower power consumption.
With the introduction of the M1 chip, Apple reigns supreme, unchallenged in the laptop/ desktop universe. Just go back to releasing 50 models of smartphones annually for the sake of market share
Yes That's what you do when your business competitor gets ahead Quit and go away 🙂
Not a fan of the reviewer. I miss Dieter. 😭
no one cares 😂
Wait - no front-facing camera in our current world? How and why would anyone launch something like this?
@Vikram Balakrishnan google should have a webcam add on software for all
It still has a web cam, she means that you cant take a selfie when its on tablet mode
@Vikram Balakrishnan ahhhhhhhhhh okay. Thanks for the clarification.
@Vikram Balakrishnan thanks for the clarification, I was wondering if she misspoke and meant a rear-facing camera.
there's still a camera at the top of the screen for video calls (you can see it in the video). she's talking about a second camera in the keyboard the samsung galaxy chromebook had that let you take pictures easily while in tablet mode.
What is Samsung doing ? They have A Galaxy Book AND a Galaxy Chromebook ??? I’m just wondering what these companies are thinking... Since Samsung is creating Dex , Windows and chromeOS devices ..
500€+ for a non windows laptop!?! Has the world gone crazy!?
@RoshanGamer never said it made sense. I have no idea why they made those choices other than to cut costs. I'm sure there are better profit margins at the $999 price level, but you'll sell a LOT more units at around $499. So it's not ULTRA-premium, but still up there with other premium Chromebooks like the Pixelbook Go.
@Josh Witte the second gen went from 4k to 1080p and they also removed the front facing camera. Wow very good samsung😐
You seem pretty uninformed. These have been around since the original Pixelbook. Obviously there is a market for premium Chromebooks or else manufacturers wouldn't continue to make them.
jeez, when will google learn. chrome os is nowhere near the value of linux, mac os and windows offer to the table. it just not worth it. macbook m1 is too much of a value now. used surface is also great if you really care about touch screen and pen support. if you care about mobile apps, you have ipad to do the job.
🙄
you don't have to explain to us the concept of "premium chrombook" - the idea of it is literally encapsulated in the labelling. We are not morons.
This whole video was pedantic and condescending.
I don't like it , I want the amoled display 😫
These are here so the brick doesn't come in contact with the rest of the system and short circuit.
3:44 No front facing camera? I can see one right there... The webcam!
@Josh Witte the webcam is terrible
@Vikram Balakrishnan Just want to understand why would that be a 'front facing' camera when in Tablet Mode... As Josh mentioned, so confusing.
There is a webcam on the front screen. They're referring to a 2nd camera in the keyboard they had on gen1 that allows easy taking of pictures/video from tablet mode.
Apparently that's a video from their Samsung Chromebook (gen 1) review. Yes, it's confusing. This whole video is confusing.
Samsung makes nice hardware as long as they're not doing the software too. Maybe they'll make a normal laptop, with a Ryzen CPU (unlikely)
