Mustang Mach-E: the hype is real

Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E is a huge bet on the future, and after spending a week with the EV, The Verge’s Sean O’Kane thinks that bet will pay off. It’s fun to drive, solidly built, and puts technology front and center without messing it up. It’s the best electric car on the road not made by Tesla or Porsche, which is a huge deal considering the project was only spun up a few short years ago.

  • Love Grabber Blue. I’m a Tesla owner and stockholder and am happy to see this. This is Tesla’s mission: to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport. Hope they follow through on OTA updates and do better at charging. My concern is dealers. EVs are a lot more reliable than gas, and way cheaper to maintain. I’ve driven them since 2012. Put 60k mi on one, and the only maintenance was tires and wiper inserts. Brake pads were only 1/3 worn. Dealers mostly make money from service. My experience with Nissan and Chevy dealers was they did their best to get you to buy gas.

  • Wish I knew the sale figures for Mustang models because, I have a theory Ford sells more V8 models than V6 models. If they sell more V6 models, then I think they have a good chance to be successful at using the Mustang moniker. Not sure Mustang V8 buyers will take to it, despite the good 0-60 time. On the other hand, if the overall vehicle execution is good enough, the name recognition might serve to bring many people to the Mustang fold who may not have previously considered one. Your experience (and people’s reactions) seemed quite positive. Hope it portends success for Ford with its first mass market EV.

  • Not a mustang, I think 99% of actual mustang goers don't consider this an electric mustang. This vehicle is pretty cool, but an electric mustang? no. A mustang is a two door coupe. This is just an electric crossover, much closer to a new Ford Edge.

  • The problem of the charging stations is solved in the EU with regulating both by having a single universal plug and that all charging stations must have an option for buying power for all cars. So, should the US also regulate this?

    nolarifynolarifyAcum 13 Zile
  • I think EVs are the way to go but if I buy a car, it'll be the Mustang GT, this is a great car but without that coyote vroom vroom a Mustang just doesn't feel like a Mustang. Still tho for what they are offering at 50k which isn't too cheap but not too costly either I think this is a great car.

    RajRajAcum 13 Zile
  • Yikes - this design is awkward and clunky. Calling it a Mustang trades brand value for short-term gimmickry. Physics dictate that a crossover cannot match a traditional coupe in handling dynamics - so why christen it a sports car?

I own two Model 3's, both are incredibly well put together. And Ford has been 100 years and STILL can't make a perfect car: see the 10 recalls in a single year for the 2020 Ford Explorer.

  • I think the Mach E is also a great knock off of the Lamborghini Urus. Or same concept idea. Lambo is know for sports cars not SUVs. And I think it was a good move by Ford. Why not play around with the future. Def a good way to focus more on design. Less parts to RnD and push forward into the future.

    FROY_BOY PRODUCTIONSFROY_BOY PRODUCTIONSAcum 15 Zile
  • Before we go any further. Verge, please let Ford know. They could have been a little more creative with their driver display. Yes. It would make the Mach cost more but it would be worth it and boost sales tremendously. Integrate it into the steering wheel like the McLaren Senna. And it flips up electronically either auto by driver configuration or when triggering different driving modes.

  • Disappointed Verge, this is not an honest review. -super lagy interface -gimmicky autopilot -very expensive zero to 60. M3 base does 3.5 on base model. -no over the air updates -very low range compared to better cheaper M3. I’d still get the tesla Model 3 or Model Y, rather than wasting money on this and regretting

  • It was another brutal day on Wall Street for Tesla shares that stayed in the red for most of the day until a "Hail Mary" pass was thrown to pump the shares back up. After reaching out to a 40 year investor we were told, " Tesla was bleeding cash and on life support for the longest time. They had to raise money in a hurry, and needed to raise as much as possible, and as quick as possible. To do this, the shares are pumped as high as they can possibly go. Then more shares are sold into the market at this highly inflated price. Billions are raised, and soon after, the share price begins to retreat back to reality. That's just the way it goes." When asked about their "flying cars" their "hover cars", and cars that can go from 0 to 60 in under a second we were told, " What good is a car that can go from 0 to 60 in under a second when the car in front of you can't. Flying cars? Show me. It's BUZZ to create excitement. It's a pipe dream to keep the bag holders in check so that they can hold onto Tesla shares tightly as they tank down to reality. Go to one of their product launches so that you can hear 100 or so people scattered throughout the room chanting at the smallest reveal. Do you not think that they are paid plants invited to create this excitement?" We don't know how low shares of Tesla will go, but we do know that the competition ( Ford ) has introduced some very exciting cars that are selling like hot cakes while thousands of Tesla cars are parked on lots with no buyers in site. It appears that Tesla has all of a sudden become "Old Hat"!!

  • I've had my Mach-e for a week. There's a lot of tech to wade through when operating the touch screen. iPod doesn't integrate as well when connected. Doesn't provide audio controls through the touchscreen. Steering wheel controls work. An iPhone completely integrates phone and audio controls. Another bug is when activating the FordPass Charging Network trial. The connection fails when activating the trial on the website. Doesn't appear to be a way to activate the trial through the FordPass mobile app. Dealer has yet to get back to me regarding the Charging Network trial. Learning about charging on the go appears to be a challenge. Although, a home charger is included with the Mach-e that will plug into a 220 dryer outlet.

Regardless of it being electric, it doesn't even have the slightest evolutionary look of a Mustang. Each Mustang in the past you could see it had evolved from the previous version but it still had that Mustang look. Not this thing. I see no Mustang here.
