MacBook Air 2020 review: the best Mac for most people
Apple’s 2020 MacBook Air comes with the new scissor-switch keyboard the company introduced in the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the processors have been upgraded to Intel’s new 10th-generation parts. Apple’s also lowered the price by $100, with the new MacBook Air now starting at $999. Nilay Patel has the full review.

Would you upgrade?
@THE Unboxing yeah same dude, the thing honestly looks sleek and macbooks usually age well.
My MacBook Air 2018 is enough..
Can I use this for gaming and video editing?
No doubt!
Yessss
Be forewarned, the MacBook has software glitches where it doesn’t assign native apps and preinstalled apps like Final Cut Pro to the purchaser.
So Apple have two 2020's Macbook Air now
Who is here after the 3.5x performance M1 announcement?
*oh Yeah..I did my research properly, you're the best online @ Alvinshyper40 on 1Instagram.. My Apple products are here already sir, they were delivered to me few hours ago.. Contact Alvinshyper40 on Instagram for your Apple products now.. He's legit and affordable*
My old MacBook stopped working I guess water damage from getting caught in the rain. So now I am watching your review on this one to go purchase one soon as 9AM hits
*finally my MacBook was fixed successful by deztoolz on Instagram he is reliable and kind he is the best of the best*
The only reason I would want the touch bar is for emojis
Bruh, I am very triggered on how you just placed your MacBook Air 2020 on your couch at 2:03 . Great video tho
I was thinking about buying this to use light room to edit photos and vids from a mavic, but also use it for uni. Is there an alternative or would it work ok for that?
Touchscreen Windows Laptop Users - Where u at???
7:00 Ipad Air?? 😂
I bought the 512gb MBA 2020 with an i7 and ended up having to call Apple support after just FIVE days from delivery as the fans weren't kicking in and the laptop was getting extremely hot even when running very simple tasks (2 tabs on Safari). The fans were just not working *at all* Ended up having to take it on a 3hr drive to the nearest Apple store and they originally didn't believe me even with notes from apple support over the phone. They supposedly 'fixed it' but even now it gets rather warm and I can't hear the fan at all even in an almost silent room. Not impressed. Should've changed it for a MBP with the same amount of storage.
3:09 "If Apple can figure out how to add trackpad support to iPadOS, it can probably figure out how to add touch support to macOS." But that's the point - of course it can. Not doing so, whilst beefing up the internals on the iPad and moving to an all-ARM processor array across laptops and iPads, is deliberate. Touch screens on non-convertible laptops are highly overrated. Apple created the multi-touch tablet experience we know and love today on the iPad. It has realised that if you want powerful mobile computing with touch support, the iPad Pro is now the way to go. Is the iPad Pro there yet? Not quite - support for power users' external accessories could be better. But it's very close, and the direction of travel is for the iPad Pro to be the touch screen laptop people want - only much better than the competition, because the OS was always built for multi-touch interaction.
Macbook air is awesome for students especially IT students
I need helps! I am getting a MacBook, but which one! The MacBook Air overheats easy and I do some small photo edits and some graphic design and other student stuff. Any configuration recommendations?
This is a good option for anyone who is looking for an upgrade. The magic keyboard and the enhanced processor are really impressive.
My laptop is touch screen and I never touch it. iPad is meant to be touched, laptop has a trackpad.
future
Thanks
The Touch Bar is awesome and so is the butterfly.keyboard just my opinion.
a lot of people are saying that sims on a macbook is a no go, is it realy that bad because a friend of mine told me that it works fine on her macbook pro so im so confused haha. so please help me out if you got some expirience with sims 4 (with multiple extensions packs) on a macbook
Is it good for schoolwork
"The best Mac" Me: Who tf creates Mac other than Apple?
good job on the video Nilay ..
what a crappy review
'Chrome is a fact of life for prople'
I hate seeing smudges on my laptop’s screen... so having no touchscreen on my macbook air isn’t a big deal for me.
I would not want to have a touch screen MacBook Air because I hate having fingerprints on my screen now, imagine if I was just touching my screen all day every day.
“Only you can know the answer in your heart”.. more wiser words haven’t been spoken
Noisy, average webcam and battery life? So disappointing Apple.
honestly i genuinely just want to know if i can make those after effects insta edits including element 3d and sapphire plugins, thats the only heavy program ill use if i got a mac 😔
MacBook Air 2020, no heat pipes for the CPU, this means, that it has "Air" in it, and Apple invented wireless cooling. Almost 100 °C for the CPU, killing these high end intel chips, meamwhile the consumers are f*cked.
Which would you prefer a Huawei D14 or Macbook air?
I’m getting one for my bday
i work at best buy and i would always past the macbook air and be like i want one really bad for school but they are so expensive. I Bought one and i Love it and its my first one.
Just got it from Apple’s back to school promotion with a pair of free AirPods
I love headphones
how about the cooling system everyone is talking about right now?
I want to be Becca's best friend
I have a touch screen laptop and I forget in MANY occasions that it’s even touch. Apple is doing the right thing by ignoring those calls.
Do we require dongals in it??
Hello, I forgot to but the i5 processor and have the i3 now. Will this be okay? What are the problems with it?
Intentionally not connecting the heat pipe to the fan just to differentiate it from the MBP is just wrong and bad for business. Like Nilay I see no value in the touchbar making the MacBook Air my only option.
I found your review of the MacBook Air very useful. I have bought it but wanted to find out whether there is any way of using a USB as I have bought a remote mouse to use. I suffer from repetitive strain injury.
At 7:01 you have an iPad Air in the channel. Hmm... uhn?
in the written review, you said it gets warm during zoom meetings. I have the 1.1 Ghz core i3, and its never ever gotten warm during zoom meetings.
You should stop reviewing the most expensive ones because the number of people who buy the cheapest one is waaaaaaay bigger than the people who buy the most expensive one!
Probably would take a MacBook.. sounds nice
Just bought this mac and love it!simply perfect in terms of value for money
No no it is not
How about editing 1080p videos with some effects? Does it freezes a lot? Planning to buy my first macbook. Thank you for answering my query. 😉
*Unpopular Opinion* "Mac Book's are only designed to sustain in colder climactic conditions"
Hi, firstly thanks for the cool review! I'm considering to purchase the new Macbook Air with the i5, would you recommend 16GB of ram or will 8GB be good enough considering i'm looking to keep it for a good few years.
16GB.
The real question is... CAN I PLAY SIMS 4? Can someone please tell me cause i want a computer that can run sims 4 with all expansions and about 4 gigs of cc.... thanks 😊
Great review, but I'm not staying home.
Honestly the most thing that I’m disappointed in is that there’s no USB ports for anything like that. Image buying a laptop and not having thst
Hi i have a question. I cosntantly need to read a lot of articles and PDFs along woith watching videos and web browsing. I do not use macbook for video editing or heavy tasks , HOWEVER I do attach a 1080p display. Do you think an i% is good enough for that with16gb ram? Or should I go for mac pro 13 base ? Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thanks. Btw very nice video.
Ordered my MacBook Air 2020 - my first MacBook! I got a student discount at Apple and a huge refund on a study trip to Russia that was sent to happen in April before coronavirus got out of hand and I can’t wait to use it for my studies at university!
I'm looking to do the same. Where did you order it, and what info. do you need to provide to verify that you're a student? Any first-timer tips?
Mmm yea i'll stick with my Microsoft laptop
I have a 2013 MacBook Air and I don't think these new ones are better. They just have newer hardware that's faster, but losing ports, and honestly, I think, from my experience in the Apple store looking at them, sturdiness, as well, makes it hard to upgrade. Computers are so expensive that it's hard to buy something you don't think is 100%.
Are you reviewing a macbook or your are you reviewing your face? More videos of the macbook and less videos of your face. Please
I kept getting 2015's cus of the new keyboard. I say keep because I keep breaking my macbooks and most recently dropped it (oh no). Gonna consider the MacBook Air. I am like a "power" chrome user so...idk. No touchbar. Old keyboard. Retina. Actually portable (i.e. not my nearly 5-pound 15" clunker).
honestly the core i3 is fine for me I personally have not had any issues plus its 899 if you use the education so its 200 dollars cheaper that Sid a pretty substantial difference in terms of price. the base model doesn't seem to have issues at least for me.
Whats good enough for most people: Buy a 2009-2013 model, install catalina (google dosdude1) and call it a day for 100-200 bucks or so...you can even add an SSD and more ram for next to nothing since all pre 2014 models are upgrade-able...apple have truly gone to shitz since Jobs died...but i cant blame them for price gouging since there are plenty of idiots that pay those prices... p.s you'l be surprised what you can do on an a 10 year old core2duo system=) I see NO frikkin' difference for normal use between the new and upgraded old...
I see you have no idea what tour talking about
then turn spotify on and open code editor, and youtube runs....which is daily life pattern. I think i will always hear airplane flying......
How does this compare to the 2018 air?
Key board and the True Tone
i like the butterfly keyboard. i learned how to type on it reason being.
I won't even call the camera there medium. It's more like something from the last century. if you had a camera in 1998, that's the quality I would expect.
I wish this was made a little more for those of us who really don’t know much about these laptops. I appreciate the video non the less
@R66 Na no I actually ended up getting an HP... this laptop was too expensive. I've heard some things about apple macbooks this year that are not so great, which led me to my final decision... I wish you luck if you got it though!!!!
@Stefanie Alvarez did you get the laptop i the end this is my first apple product to
This will be my first apple product... how long have you been using apple and are the laptops known to last long? I'm using my savings on this one and I'd like to know before I spend over 1,000 on it.
I hate touch screens on laptops. I don’t need another iPad. What’s the point.
I have the i7 air 2020:)
I am a Social Psychology PhD candidate and I own a 2014 Air. Since the Covid crisis I've been forced to telework and the machine is slacking a little bit, plus it is giving weird little electric shocks at random when charging. Would you think the Air 2020 would do the job for me? I thought of the i5 option. My typical daywork implies a ton of browser tabs open for research articles as well as data processing in SPSS/R and the likes. Plus Microsoft Office (it is the official licesing of my uni). What do you think? Any help would be appreciated.
For everything u described the air 2020 would work I would just upgrade the ram to 16 giga
I would assume it is good editing videos on iMovie.. I’m using my iPhone. So would this be a good buy for that. Also for storing family pictures.
i really don’t know what to get, im a student so i was thinking about getting the 2020 macbook air, but after seeing reviews of the 13 inch pro, i’m conflicted, any tips?
@christian lee Ask your study supervisor what specs the machine needs to have. Basically, MBA has nice speakers and a good screen. Great for Netflix and Office work. Anything more demanding like photoshop, video editing, gaming, 3D modeling and stuff like that this laptop won't do. That's because it overheats after a minute and then reduces performance by a lot. The MBP does not do this. Or get a Windows machine. Those also don't have heat issues and are faster as well.
@Shaqqb Yes. I ended up with the HP Envy x360 15. Works very well
Did y'all pick one yet? Lol
Lauren Keller haven’t bought anything yet LMAO i’m a theater major so i’m trying to figure it all out but i’m also very lazy ha
Same ... what did you go with??
That was a great video thanks guys
Outside of fashion, there is no reason to buy a macbook air.
I understand you saying that people should spring for the i5 version Nilay but some of us live in countries other than the US where Apple’s pricing is no joke. It’s well and good to tell people to “go up the extra hundred dollars” but where I’m from, the price difference is more equivalent to $350.
I guess what I’m really asking here, is if the value of upgrading to the i5 model is worth the price of a base model iPad?
What would be some comparable maybe more affordable models? Hp asus microsoft?
Damn. That was a beautifully done stay-at-home tech video. Keep this up, and we totally won't need anyone going back to an office again.
Can't watch sorry. Not enough space above your head.
Why should you pay good money for a lap top with high end internals yet you are advised not to use Chrome. From. Many comments it seems the continued high temperatures will give this lap top a short life span. I’m amused that it’s a lap top that you can’t put on your lap. Gets too hot.
I just bought this in Dallas on 30th April because of my birthday and I spill green tea on my previous laptop . This is my first apple product. Im still learning how to use this. Hopefully I don't need to change laptop for the next 10years.
@Aqilfahad Yusoff I just told you... the U.S.
@Stefanie Alvarez u didn't even google? Nah not important. Where r u from?
@Aqilfahad Yusoff I'm not great when it comes to Geography. Lol
@Stefanie Alvarez Guess. It's in between Singapore and Thailand
@Aqilfahad Yusoff Yes. Where are you from?
Buy the i5 one...they never want you to buy the basic model anyways.
It really is not a magic keyboard, its the REPENTANCE keyboard, they came back to the truth straight path.
i just got my mac air 2020 and for some really odd reason the battery literally lasts for 3. hours only
CASH IN YOUR WARRANTY! Low battery life on such a device is unacceptable! You must've gotten a lemon.
yea me too, I think I'm gonna exchange it for the same one maybe
I bought the mac pro 2017 version over this... hopefully that wasnt a mistake?
Can i have mac
Does anyone know if this 2020 MacBook Air is a perfect use for Xcode 11? I’ve done researched on used MacBook Pros but their either too expensive ($600-900) or too old to run Xcode 11 smoothly (2011-2014).
Here in Australia the MacBook Air is $1500 AUD for just the base model!
And I don't experience any problems with my 2017 MacBook Pro and it's keyboard. In fact I like it.
I want an stylus support
I think it’s safe to say most people use laptops for typing not as a touch device.
I got this laptop and I love it🤩🤩
How’s web browsing and emails vs iPad pro
It's the cheapest that's why it's the most popular lol.
Thank you for the keys test, and without talking. Funny thing, I enjoy typing on my MBA and MBP butterfly keys, but the reliability issues gives me some concern. And I too am no fan of that touch bar on my macbook pro 15'.
Wait a minute, if you look closely at 2:30, on the MacBook air screen shows some dude talking with the new iPad Pro with the magic keyboard. But this video released at march 26 2020. As I write this comment, the verge just uploaded the review of the new magic keyboard for the new iPad pro. Hmm.. strange.
I bet they have never seen the cooling system of this thing :)
Got the 16” Pro and agree with you on the TouchBar, it’s totally useless to me. Getting this Air.
VirtuaMe okay...two laptops in like a year...okayyyy
Is it me or anyone heard him say iPad Air at 6:55?
Hello guys, I'm studying informatic engineering, do you reccomend it to me for programming?
