Apple’s total control over its hardware and software has been critical to the success of the iPhone. And now, Apple is potentially poised to bring those same benefits to its new ARM Macs. Here’s what the new ARM chips might enable in the future of Macs.

Am asking because I am considering buying a new iPad pro with a new magic keyboard as my only computer. Can I? Considering the future of apps on ARM?

Customers rejected addition of touch elements to windows(windows 8) and developers don’t care about Microsoft’s mobile offerings. Microsoft is already transitioning into services/developer company.

  • Better performance is almost a given on these new macs, but I’m looking forward to better thermals and better battery life. Those are the two biggest reasons why I can’t justify buying another Intel Mac. Charging those things cost you money as well and when my Laptop Mac feels like it has to be plugged in at all times, I feel like “why didn’t I just buy an iMac if it’s going to be stuck to the wall anyway”. I’m also hoping for FaceId and LTE. I really feel like those features are going to make the Mac a far more appealing options to even the general consumer.

  • 3:48 Arm computers in by no means a new idea for desktops and laptops, many linux capable computers are Arm based this is inclusive of almost all chrome books where it is perfectly possible to flash a less locked down linux or BSD distro than chrome/chromium os. The raspberry pi has been using arm for years and the latest ones are (apart from the lack of graphics performance) at least as powerful as low end x86 systems with a much smaller form factor, power consumption and in some cases even price.

      Ella StanforthElla StanforthAcum 6 luni
    • Also, if an app has been written well and in a portable way, in most cases a simple recompile should port it to arm just fine

    • The answer to how many sales it had, will tell you why they did not bother to port it, in contrast from day one they ported the entire creative cloud, and all the Microsoft office tools to arm mac

      4everzapy4everzapyAcum 5 luni
  • how do we know apple silicon means ARM? Maybe theyre just gonna start making their own processors just for macs . All the benefits you mentioned would still be present but without the limitations of a mobile foundation. i find it unlikely that apple will limit themselves to sharing the processor of an iphone with a much more capable macbook or imac. I wouldnt be surprised if apple started a new line of chips just like they did for the A-series, just for desktops and laptops.

    Harvey LimHarvey LimAcum 6 luni
    • It is based of arm instructions set.

      VAIBHAV SRIVASTAVAVAIBHAV SRIVASTAVAAcum 6 luni
  • According to me apple will not face a rocky road due to app support like windows is going through because app makers know that whatever happens windows is always gonna release its x86 version of its OS. But in Apple they slowly but surely they gonna get this thing done, sooner or later there macOS will withdraw its support from x86 chips. So better make sure to port them. Whereas Rosetta is not runtime emulator that windows used, it is an compile time emulator. Which means app are translated not when app is running, but when app is installed, which releases a huge overhead on CPU.

    VedVedAcum 6 luni
  • The app ecosystem is possibly the reason why there is a shift to ARM processors for all Macs to begin with; alongside with the idea of preserving battery life while the MacOS system itself can simultaneously run as fast as their iOS counterparts could.

    Gabriel SanchezGabriel SanchezAcum 6 luni
  • Difference being that the Pro X isn't the only way to get into the Windows ecosystem. ARM-powrered Macs on the other hand will (eventually) be the only way into MacOS.

    Nick BNick BAcum 6 luni
    • @C M What are you replying in regard to? My reply was with respect to the implication that the Pro X somehow shows that ARM isn't successful as a desktop platform. Nothing to do with hackintoshes.

      Nick BNick BAcum 6 luni
    • There is already an ARM version of Windows, but the ARM cpu isn't the problem, the T2 chip is, pretty sure in 3 years no new mac wil work without a T2 chip so hackintoshers are going to face a real challenge.

That’s making the ARM macs the gaming beasts of the future, just to say. And I don’t think, that it was a just a happy coincidence, that no 32 bit apps are running on macs since last year, that they switched over to metal und rebuild everything to APFS. They done it right, so right that everything is set to get by far the biggest player in every field

  • Microsoft didn't really have a plan going into Windows RT or Windows on ARM, or any of that. And then they just dropped the Surface Pro X, or whatever, like it would just work out. Honestly, I think they're trying to herd computer industry cats. Apple, instead, so much legwork before even announcing their transition to Apple Silicon: adding robust mouse support into iPadOS (so those apps will feel seamless on the mac), switching to Swift and unifying the Mac & moble APIs, rolling out Catalyst, making Rosetta 2 robust enough to run Maya and Tomb Raider, working with Adobe / MS in private to get their apps working on ASi, etc. They're just taking this much more seriously.
